Summer Marsala

Pantone’s color of the year, marsala, may seem more appropriate for the fall and winter. While Pantone chose marsala as its color of the year due to its warmth, you can still rock this dark, rich color during the summer. Here are some unconventional marsala-toned summer favorites you can wear and still be cool.

Cheaper Find of the Week: Rag & Bone Newbury ooties

In my humble opinion, Rag & Bone’s Classic Newbury Bootie is the perfect go-to fall/winter/spring shoe. With a moderate heel height and a classic style, these cowhide booties can literally be paired with anything. Although they are quite versatile, the price is not so ideal—the famous Newbury bootie starts off at $525 at most retailers. You might be able to find them cheaper on amazon.com, although they will probably be used. Instead of trying to hunt down a discount on the Internet, take a look at Nine West’s almost identical Charnel Bootie for 99.95 at DSW.

Ok, there are some obvious differences. The Newbury bootie is 100% cowhide; the Charnel bootie has a leather upper and synthetic sole. The Newbury bootie features a paneled shaft while the Charnel bootie doesn’t. Nonetheless, for almost $400 cheaper, the Charnel bootie does the same trick and is still a classic, ultra chic boot (see comparison chart below).

Cheaper Find of the Week – Trench Coat Edition

Winter after winter, trench coats remain a classic piece and a hot commodity. If you don’t already have one in your closet, now is the time to get one. Not only do they never go out of style, trench coats can be paired with just about anything that’s already in your closet (dresses, jeans, slacks, ankle boots, tall boots, rain boots, etc).  Burberry probably has THE most iconic, stylish trench coats. However, they come with a hefty price tag. Burberry’s London Mottram Trench is on sale for $746.25 (it normally retails for $995!) at Bloomingdales. If you don’t want to sacrifice rent for a trench coat, take a look at these much cheaper, but just as chic trench coats below:

How to Make Wide-leg Trousers Appear Long and Lean

A pair of sleek, wide-leg trousers can easily look frumpy if not worn properly. Wide-leg trousers can also be a worry for short people (like me) because wide-leg pants tend to shorten and widen legs. If you’re petite, or just unsure of wide pants, use these four tips to make your legs appear long and slim in wide pants.

Wide leg pants

1. Go to a Tailor. Pants too long can make your outfit seem sloppy. Take your wide-leg trousers or jeans to a tailor and have them hemmed an inch or two.

2. Wear a heel. No, you don’t have to put on a 5-inch stiletto or wedge. A small heel, as low an as inch, can add length to your legs.

3. Choose straight, wide-leg trousers. Straight leg trousers already have that tailored look and instantly slim your thighs and legs.

4. Tuck in your Top. Like pants that are too long, a long shirt paired with wide pants can look sloppy. Tucking in your top can easily polish your look and add length to the bottom half of your body. If you’re worried about too much of your backside showing or don’t like the tucked look, try tucking in just the front or one side of the blouse. Tucking in the front or one side does the same trick.
